"Charming find!"

by Sarah Montzka

Alberta is a fun and funky little neighborhood complete with nearby restaurants and shops (and great coffee across the street at Case Study Roasters!). We only stayed one night but appreciated being within walking distance of so many culinary options. Low Gear is clean, spacious and furnished a with cool, modern decor that still feels welcoming and cozy. Comfortable beds, awesome shower and well-stocked kitchen. It exceeded our expectations and met the needs of our multi-generational party (10 - 71 years old). Communication was clear and friendly. Thanks, Shift Rentals! We'll be back!

"Great stay in Portland!"

by Amy McMorrow

Our stay at low gear was great - all the comforts of home in a great part of town with lots of places to walk to and explore. The owners were very accommodating, access was easy, the kids had plenty of room to play both indoors and out, and everything was well-equipped and spotless. There was some nighttime noise from the street when the windows were open, but other than that we had no issue. Thanks for a great stay!

"Excellent location and great house"

by Shelly Burkert-Fellers

We loved the house and the set up of low gear. We could not have been happier with the location. 3 generations of our family stayed here and everyone was satisfied.

"Beautiful Rental!"

by Kristen Sunkes

My family and I stayed here for several days. The space is very charmingly decorated. It is very clean and comfortable. Located in an interesting neighborhood it was a great place to stay while we visited Portland. There were six of us and there was plenty of room!

"Great location, cute place; needs a little love."

by Tammy Jimenez

Overall, our experience was very good. The location is fantastic! It's along a street filled with restaurants and shops—some rated Portland's best. We loved walking through the neighborhood, and enjoyed a few runs as well. It's a fifteen minute drive to downtown, and Washington Park, which houses a ton of Portland must-sees. The house is cute, and has everything you need. The house is setup great for kids, and even includes toys, highchair and pack-n-play. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are as follows: the beds are not comfortable, and the pillows are terrible, and the twin beds make a lot of noise. I think beds and bedding are important in any vacation rental, so this place fell short in that regard. Also, the internet connection is awful. If you need internet, take a mifi or use your phone as a personal hotspot. And finally, don't do laundry before bed or nap time—the washing machine is super loud. Also, the outside patios need some love. My kids still enjoyed playing out there, but it needs to be cleaned up and maintained a little better. That's it, everything else was grand.

"Funky, environmental, and friendly!"

by Denise Kapaun

Everything was clean. There were locally made snacks and a sweet note waiting for us. Whitney responded quickly when I texted her. The book with details and discounts was extremely helpful. We really enjoyed the photo book describing the property. We were close to everything we needed, including the bus stop. Great walking neighborhood. I loved Portland and this house was more than I expected. Thank you!

We really enjoyed our stay at Lower Gear...can't wait to return!

"This was a super comfortable and clean home for our week long stay in Portland."

by Lois Braun-Oddo

Loved the location. It was walkable to great shops, restaurants and coffee shops. There's no parking on site, but lots of space available on the side streets. There's a lot of night life happening in this area, so you will hear it if windows are open. We would definitely stay here again.

"This house is sooooo clean. And perfectly located."

Great place to stay in Portland. We loved this house. Managed by professionals. Would definitely recommend it. In fact, if we're in Portland again, we will rent this unit, or the one above. (it's a 2-story house). Is located in the heart of the Alberta Arts District, with several parks within walking distance. Restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and a famous ice-cream parlor, all within walking distance as well. Great place to vacation!!!!

"Great location and VERY clean!!!"

by Galey Doty

We just returned home after spending a week in this cute little rental. First of all, this house was spotless when we arrived and that is a very important feature in a rental. The location is in the heart of the Alberta Arts District, within walking distance to our daughter's home. There are tons of coffee shops, restaurants, and small businesses everywhere along Alberta. The food is fantastic; some of the best we've ever eaten. We love Portland, but now, we especially love this particular neighborhood. It just doesn't get any better than this. I have to be honest and say that the first night that we spent here was rough due to very noisy neighbors above who were up all night and we could hear every footstep. The problem was immediately addressed by the owner and the rest of the week was just fine. We were grateful for their prompt intervention. We intend to rent this home in the future and highly recommend it to others.

"Top Notch Place"

by Michele Silva

We were in town for our daughter's wedding and chose this lovely place to stay for a week. Was top notch and we give it a 10! Loved the layout of the house...the colors and the decor.... We cooked a meal one night and it was great using the modern kitchen. Loved the concrete floors and they stayed warm all day...even when walking around barefoot. It was located in a great part of Portland..enjoyed many of the restaurants and all within walking distance. The manager Whitney can be easily reached if you need to get in touch with someone. A nice note and a bottle of wine was waiting for us when we arrived. The beds were so comfy!!! Thank you Michelle and Klaus for making our stay there wonderful and it was the perfect place for us to be able to enjoy our daughter's wedding! The Silva's

"Great location, nice and clean."

We had a great time and could not have asked for a better location! Due to weather, we had a last minute change of plans and this Alberta street rental was perfect. Friendly owners and great coffee just across the street. Thank You!!

"Modern, clean and well appointed in a perfect location"

by null null

Great neighborhood in Portland. Food trucks, second hand shops and funky art all make this a cool spot to stay. One block from the bus downtown too. Rooms were comfortable and the extras made it more so - check in amenities - nice bottle of wine, patio outside and plenty of room to chill. I was expecting it to be noisier being right on Alberta Street but we all slept well. We were here in at the end of Sept but I could see this as a destination in the summer because of the patio etc. I would definitely return.

"Perfect location to experience Portlandia"

by Jeff Martin

We rented both the high and low gear for a family reunion. The house is well appointed and modern with a touch of eclectic. The location is fantastic for taking in the local food scene with many options in walking distance. You have to park on the side streets as there is no parking at the house itself but this was not an issue. The neighborhood is in the process of transition and well along the way. You can sit right on the front porch to enjoy your coffee and soak it up. We used the public transit on all our trips to Portland. We would take the #72 bus to the Interstate station to catch the train to Pioneer Square. On the way back we'd catch the #8 bus from outside of Macy's to the stop a block away on NE Alberta. That takes from 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. You can get an all day, all modes travel pass for the bus, train and streetcar for $5 which is a great value. our kids found that part of the adventure.

The upstairs has AC but the low gear does not so keep that in mind if it's a hot time of year.

We really loved the loft master bedroom and bathroom in the high gear.

And our kids loved the resident cat called boo boo kitty. Apparently he's well known in the neighborhood and very friendly.

If you're visiting Portland this is a great place to stay for the full experience. Sure beats the downtown hotels we were originally planning.

"The house was so cute and the location was perfect!"

by Cecily Hawkins

We had an amazing time in Portland and Shift Low Gear was perfect for a bachelorette party of 8! The house was decorated cute and it was cozy and very accommodating. The location was amazing to just walk around and grab food or do some local shopping. I would highly recommend staying here!

"Charming place in a nice neighborhood!"

by Jason Ragatz

I rented Low Gear out for a 3-night stay with a group of 6 friends total and we could not have been more thrilled. The place is located in the artsy Alberta neighborhood and walking distance from several places to eat, drink, and explore some very distinct Portland establishments. Getting there from the airport was about a 20min Uber/Lyft, and it was even less than that to downtown.

The place itself was superb: clean, modern, and full of useful little amenities I hadn't even considered beforehand. They laid out bath towels and soap, and the kitchen came fully stocked with dishes. There's even a small amount of food and cooking ingredients keep there, with a loose "take some, leave some" policy.

The owners were also very friendly on several occasions and were very responsive when it comes to communicating (they did so via a property management firm). First, they got back to me quickly about having no problem forgoing their usual 5-night minimum for a 3-night stay in a hole on their calendar, which was a huge relief as I struck out in many attempts on Airbnb, some of which simply never got back to me. And then, they were able to accommodate an early check-in for my group. There's a lockbox outside with a key that made the whole check-in/out process a breeze, as well as general entry/exit with our group size.

I also adored the nice touch of being greeted with a handwritten note and a binder full of places to check out nearby (including a couple local discounts!). All in all I could not recommend Low Gear highly enough! We had a wonderful stay!

"Well appointed, great location, will return."

by Colleen Gibbs

Owners did a great job making sure this garden apartment feels bright - High ceilings and good light. Efficient layout, fun decor, well- appointed kitchen. Great binder of information for things to do, places to eat. Loved the neighborhood, as did our teenagers and 10 yr old.

"Great House in Fun Portland Neighborhood"

by Test Test

Loved staying at this place! It's in a great neighborhood and actually sits on Alberta street which has great restaurants, bars and shops for all budgets. The house is comfortable and well-equipped and is a perfect base for venturing out into all that Portland has to offer. We were at the Oregon Coast in 90 minutes and the Columbia Gorge in less than 60 minutes. Downtown Portland and other fun neighborhoods could all be reached in minutes.

"Perfect Portland getaway!"

by Laena Huffaker

Low Gear was an amazing place for a group of friends or a family to spend a weekend (or longer!). The decor is great- lots of fun art and a variety of furniture and lighting. There are adorable scenes set up outside of the egress windows! Something fun to look at everywhere. The shower and radiant heated concrete floors were highlights; the place felt modern but cozy. Location was excellent- great coffee and brunch options across the street, co-op a block away, and lots of cute shops and food options on Alberta. We did get some noise from a party upstairs one night- some rooms were more impacted than others. There were lots of amenities, including a bottle of wine upon arrival. It had onsite laundry, dishwasher, nice towels, and parking on side streets was pretty easy to find. Highly recommend!

"It Was Great"

by Kyler Christensen

We couldn't park in the driveway beside the house but other than that everything was pretty much perfect and several things used for cooking were already supplied. Thank you!

"Great location for family fun."

by Linda Angie Ribowsky

Our family of 4 adults were thrilled with our choice. It looked just like the photos and was just as clean. The beds were very comfortable, the house quiet. The kitchen fully furnished. It has off the street parking, a plus. Many wonderful restaurants and shops within walking distance. We got to meet the owners. A very nice couple who take great care of the property. They have warm smiles and have great taste in their decorations. Everything was well thought out. We would stay there again in a heart beat. We highly recommend it.

"Perfect location for girl's getaway"

by Kathryn Toyne

This place was fantastic. Upon arrival, there was a nice hand written note and a bottle of wine which was a lovely touch. We did some tourist things outside of the area, but every afternoon when we came home, we were so happy to have a nice spot to relax and unwind. I loved the entire neighborhood and the atmosphere. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice vacation.

"Great place"

by Brian McGinnis

Great place, great property, great location, great hosts. I would have given this place 5 stars but there was no air conditioning and Portland was nearly 100 during our visit. Other than that, perfect.

"Wonderful house and neighborhood!"

by Nancy Wooley

What a great Portland experience we had at this house! It was so urban and chic and the neighborhood was all everyone had said it would be! We walked across the street for coffee or breakfast, wandered down the streets at night going in and out of little shops and restaurants. We never even made it downtown! Our trip was short though. The house had everything we needed and we all really enjoyed the shower...separately of course! Even my 85 year old aunt couldn't stop talking about how nice it felt on a cold, rainy morning. We had a perfect weekend! Thanks to the Shift owners and management for everything.

"family celebration"

by barbara thompson

we LOVED this house! it was exactly as described, but the neighborhood was better than we expected. Beds were all comfortable, able to cook in the kitchens, plenty of community space, overall loved it.
The only concern was because of all the rain the steps going into both units were very slippery, so beware.
otherwise, it was truly wonderful!

"great place to stay in a funky neighborhood!"

by Jim Serling

We had a wonderful stay in this home. We had everything we needed, plenty of space, the house was clean, in a great neighborhood, great city. We highly recommend staying here. Wonderfully decorated, with lots of fun little artifacts and reading material. A great choice for Portland, and only 10 minutes from downtown, and very close to the airport and great hiking!

"Exceptional quality and location"

by Marilyn Chladil

My friends and I (total 7 adults) from Austin TX shared the Low Gear 3 BR, 1.5 Baths for a 5-night stay. The apartment was exactly as advertised, reasonably priced, and in a vibrant location with plenty of options for shopping, dining, and late night excursions. The nearby co-op grocery served our immediate needs for snacks and refreshments and the larger grocery was only a short drive away. The central location was an easy drive or bus trek to the gardens and downtown. The beds were comfortable, the place was well stocked for dishes, cutlery, and coffee makers, and there is a clean and well-stocked laundry room. We did not want for a thing during our 5-night stay and, therefore, never had to call Michelle to ask for help. We were very grateful for this smartly designed space and it added to the enjoyment of our vacation.

"Great place"

by Sara Kozelisky

We really enjoyed our stay at low gear. The location was great for getting to the rose quarter. The neighborhood wasn't to noisey at nite which was a plus for us since we had small kids with us. It was very clean and had everything we needed. We loved the kid play area. It wasn't huge but it didn't matter the kids used their imagination with what was there. It was nice to have a "private park" for them. We had absolutely no issues with anything, except maybe the filtered water from the fridge. It was very very slow. But we didn't feel the need to complain because it was such a little thing and everything else was perfect.
Loved looking out our windows to see different scenes. Star Wars scene was awesome!!

We would definitely love to stay again. Thanks for everything.

"Excellent place to stay in Portland"

by David Treptow

Our group, which had 13 members, rented both units of this house for a weekend. It was the perfect size and had everything we needed (including coolers for a road trip and bottled water because of a 1-day warning about the drinking water in the city).

It is in a great location, with restaurants, shops, and a brew pub all within short walking distance. Anything we wanted to do within the city was easy to access.

"AWESOME location! Great for families..."

by Shay Davidson

We stayed in low gear for 3 nights - amazing! Perfect location, stress free area with great eating / shopping options. We never heard a peep from the upstairs renters, although they may have heard us - we have 4 little kids. We have stayed in numerous vacation rentals and this place was the BEST. Cozy, clean, safe, professional, affordable. Thank you for making our trip to pdx so great!

"Perfect spot for a family getaway!!"

by Julianne Smith

We spent Spring Break at Low Gear and could not have been happier with our accommodation and the location.

Low Gear is situated with great access to downtown by bicycle (20ish mins towing 2 kids in a trailer), while the Alberta St neighbourhood gave us all we needed for excellent eats and entertainment close by (we have children ages 2 & 4, so don't like to stray too far in the evenings). The shopping on Alberta St is top notch - wonderful boutiques with a little something for everyone. We also found the Zoo and other attractions very easy to access by car along the highway.

Low Gear itself is awesome - funky, unique decor made it feel upmarket without feeling stuffy (read: easy on the eyes AND kid proof). We loved all the personal touches. Warning: the play hive was such a hit with our little guys that they often didn't want to leave to do any sightseeing. Some people may be put off by the sound of traffic (which is occasionally audible inside), but we actually found Alberta St to produce less noise that we had expected (it is the city, right?!). We will not only come back to Low Gear, but will recommend it to our friends. Thanks for hosting such a great visit!!!

"Shift is the place to stay!"

by Denise Perez

We had a great time staying at Shift. The home is beautiful! The owners were very welcoming and accommodating. I would highly recommend this place to any and all who come to Portland looking for a place to stay. We loved it and will be back.

"Perfect Location"

by Andrew Ames

This place is amazing. I rented out both units for a weekend. The place is in amazing condition and has everything you need and more. I cannot believe the location. It is walking distance to some of the best places to eat and amazing bars. I would stay here again in a heart beat!!

"Cozy and convenient!"

by Blythe Simmons

Really well equipped house with all the amenities. There were umbrellas, plenty of towels and it was super clean. Wonderful location. When I had a question it was answered immediately. We will recommend this rental without a doubt. We will be back.

"Lovely, modern and comfortable rental right in the middle of the NE Portland action!"

by Stacy Short

Our family stayed with SHIFT in Lower Gear over the Thanksgiving week, and had an amazing time. The apartment was even nicer than we had imagined, with lots of amenities and every detail thought-through. The beds were comfortable, the linens were great quality, and working with the folks at SHIFT was easy and convenient. Our kids loved the outdoor hive structure, and the toys/chalk, too! We had one question about the wi-fi in the rental, and the manager was immediately accessible and helped us get the answer we needed quickly and easily. As a side note, we didn't realize that we were right in the middle of all the fun shops and restaurants on Alberta Street, and were pleasantly surprised with how calm and peaceful everything felt just off this busy street, with the private back patio. As a bonus, there are lots of great coupons and discounts for the shops on the street, and we could easily walk only a block or two (or even a few steps!) to breakfast, for coffee, to a great grocery co-op, and for gourmet ice cream. We loved SHIFT, and hope to be back in the summer!

"Fun, Funky place in a great part of Portland"

by Adrea Wheaton

Low Gear was a fun, funky place to stay in a artsy, lively part of town. Great bars, restaurants and bloody Mary's within walking distance. The place itself was fantastically furnished and so artistically designed. The attention to detail was impressive and we all really appreciated the radiant heat flooring and the thoughtfully designed spaces. We would definitely stay there again!

"Great spot"

We had a great time visiting Portland. We were happy with this house. Everything was as described. Jen was very accommodating. The bus into town is only 1/2 half block away. There is a fantastic little grocery there as well (I wish I could take the grocery home with me). The restaurant across the street (Tin Shed) is fabulous. We ate half of our restaurant meals in Portland at that place. The area is very cute, lots of nice shopping. There was a barbecue grill outside that we used. We tried to use the oven, but someone had spilled something in it and the smell was overpowering. It was very convenient to have the kitchen and bathrooms already stocked with basics. The decor was adorable, however, the furniture in the living room was not too comfortable for lounging. There were enough nice towels for showers, but only one wash cloth in the whole place. I would stay here again, and recommend it.

"Great, modern home base"

by Hamish Eisler

This is a great, versatile place, suitable for a family weekend with kids or a group of friends (we were 8 guys in town for a reunion weekend). There are many interesting restaurants and shops in the immediate vicinity and make for easy exploration. The place is immediately comfortable - it has been very nicely redone and there are lots of nice touches. The only downside is that you will need to drive to downtown if that is in your itinerary. But the ample space and affordability definitely makes that a worthwhile tradeoff.

"Great place - here's our list of pros and cons"

by Linn Engel

We recently returned from our trip to Portland and stayed in the Low Gear section of the home. It was just me, my husband, and our 14 month old, who isn't quite walking yet. I will just cut to the chase and list some pros and cons.

-Great location! So much to explore in neighborhood. I enjoyed the Tin Shed across the street and the food trucks just a min or 2 away
-Bedrooms are a good size and comfortable. Each room has a dresser, but no closet. We were able to fit our pack n play in the room with twin beds, but I think one could fit in any of the rooms.
-Clean, modern, nicely decorated
-Nice communal outdoor area with some play equipment for kids and adults. Cornhole, play shelter, bin with balls etc
-Owners are very friendly, considerate, and responsive. We didn't complain about the construction going on next door since we are up early with our little one, but they actually gave us a bottle of wine and some ear plugs anyway.

-This is no secret as the pictures show this, but there are no curtains in the common area. This kind of bothered us as we felt a bit exposed when we were there during the evening. Also, if our upstairs neighbors were hanging out in the common area, I felt like they could see us too, which kind of bothered me. All the bedrooms have curtains of course.
-It can get a little loud depending on what your upstairs neighbors are like (ie- how loudly they walk).
-No garbage disposal, but that is because they strongly encourage composting.

Overall, a great place to stay, but I did want to give people some details so they know what they are committing to. I notice a lot of reviews on VRBO lack any detail, just vague "it was great!". So I hope you find this review helpful.

"Clean, cozy and charming"

by Hollis Way

My girlfriend and I, along with her two kids, stayed here during the 4th of July. It was the perfect location for us. We enjoyed walking to Barista and many of the other shops nearby. We spent quite a bit of time in downtown Portland. With a 5 minute drive to downtown, it made for easy access into the city. The rooms were perfect for us and the shower was amazing. We love that Portland is so green and well, GREEN! That was a huge plus. I recommend playing cornhole out in the yard. It's quite addictive and super fun. This was one of our best vacations yet. Thanks to the great rental.

"I absolutely loved everything!"

by Mike

I absolutely loved everything about my experience from renting this property - the modern touches throughout the space, the price, the location, and equally important the host! Michelle was quick to respond to my constant flood of emails and questions and was extremely flexible and courteous with any special request I made. I could not have asked for anything better. My friends and I had such an amazing experience in Portland and many of the memorable moments came inside this charming space and in Alberta neighborhood. Will definitely come back soon, without hesitation. Thank you, Michelle!

"The place was everything we hoped for."

by Zoe

We had a wonderful stay in this lovely suite. It was so great to be located right on Alberta street, so close to the neighborhood's shops and restaurants. Yet, it was surprisingly quiet despite being so close to a busy street. Michelle was great. Everything was so easy, convenient and thoughtful. The place was everything we hoped for. We loved the modern look, the radiant floor heating and the cats lounging on the back deck. We would definitely stay there again.

We chose this property because of its location. I wanted a place to walk to restaurants, shops, and the bus line--I wasn't disappointed. The pictures correctly displayed that it was tastefully decorated, clean, and the kitchen had everything you would want. Off-street parking was a definite plus. The owner quickly responded to all my questions.

If you're looking for a "base camp" for your visit to Portland, I would definitely recommend it. My adult children loved it. We will be back.

"Charming and delightful!"

I loved my stay at Low Gear. Great location, and a wonderful apartment with all the amenities. It is the sort of place that the owners have put tons of love and thought into - you can tell by all the details. I loved the fresh flowers! Michelle and Klaus were very responsive...and my stay was fantastic. I'd recommend in a heartbeat!

"Best place to stay in Portland!"

by Anne

This 3 bedroom was spacious enough for my 6 member family. It is perfectly situated on alberta within walking distance to many fabulous shops and eateries. The house was beautifully decorated and had many extra amenities we were not expecting, i.g. exercise bike, washer & dryer with detergent, bottle of wine, maps, toys for the kids, and many more. The renting process was easy and hassle-free. We will be returning to this property whenever we make our way back up to Portland.

from $107 / night
